We began the Design Colloquium series in 2005 as a forum for selected peers to discuss topics of relevance to their firms in a memorable setting. Since then, our two firms have hosted seven limited-attendance events for the senior leaders of selected architecture, planning, landscape architecture, engineering and interior design firms in North America. These Design Colloquium events have been extremely successful — both as a learning format, and as a venue for informal exchange among peers. In the past, we have focused on two groups: the largest firms in the country, and Design First firms — those practices that have managed to retain exceptional design excellence without focusing on a design superstar.
The premise of our events is that those who know best how to address the challenges of design firm leadership are the people who are involved on a daily basis at the helms of their firms. These people have been both speakers and participants at the Design Colloquium events. In addition to presentations and discussions, the one-and-one-half day forums provide opportunities for interaction among attendees in a stimulating setting in San Francisco’s Golden Gate National Park Conservancy. The tenor of the events is candid and lively, affording a free exchange of ideas and experiences. Following the events, we publish a white paper that summarizes and highlights the presentations and discussions.
Our next Design Colloquium on June 14-15, 2012 is focused on mid-sized firms of all kinds. We will explore the future of firms roughly in the $10 - $40M range to address the fundamental question: What can they expect as the trend toward industry consolidation gains momentum? This day-and-one-half event will not only look at threats to mid-sized firms, but highlight how firms in this category have been and can continue to be successful. We will also look at options for firms which might want to consider adjusting their business model to respond to industry changes in general.
